Go Figure
‘Go Figure’ is a project which must have a connection of site relevance, rather than site specificy. As long as the research and development contains the figure, the work can then progress into something that bears some kind of relevance to your site.
This project has been a tough one, tougher than I thought but, slowly it has come together towards the final hurdle. I feel that this is a project that I could take further, beyond the 5 weeks for sure. It was just difficult to make that decision of what to go with.
I have looked in to repetition as the main theme. Andy Warhol was in fact one of the sole ‘figures’ that influenced my idea. Warhol is known for his series of works i.e. repetition. There was one particular work that I liked very much when I went to the RSA (Royal Scottish Arts) exhibition on his work. The photography work which shows the same image, repeated six times. This method was effective in pointing out change within something that remains to be the same. What I mean is, it was deliberate and the reason why… because it shows that the more you look at something, the more you notice, or see something you didn’t see before. I had already, decided that this would be a theme of mine.
However, I also decided that as well as repeating a simple line or section, I would experiment to see what happens the more you physically draw or paint something. This was to show a contrast in media between both; photography and painting.
It has been more of an experimental project, which I have and have not enjoyed at times.
Some of the basic imagery before repetition theory
I have included both myself and other individuals in amongst this project. The aim is not only to confuse the viewer as to what they are looking at but, to make them ask themselves “aren’t we all the same”. This project is to raise awareness that we are all the same, despite colour, race or religion or what we metaphorically and literally ‘wear’.
If it is possible to show the body in this form (and it is) and that we all look quite strange and in a sense different but, altogether the same, perhaps more people out there would be more willing to get along with one another and there would be less narrow minded people in this world.
I believe that showing my investigation in basic tones of black and white reveal that we are all similar or the same when you really pay attention.
The work itself will be something that I shall place up on walls, lamp posts anything I can think of that most of us will come in direct contact with.
Thoughts on how successful, I feel I have been
I would say that a lot of the imagery has been quite strong. Some of the pencil and painting work has been quite interesting also. However, as yet I haven’t put any of work up, other than the photographic imagery. I think again, it is because I prefer the photograph’s, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!
I believe that the project has been a success because it has questioned the minds of the viewer. What is it? That seems to be something, I have heard a lot. Which is exactly what I wanted, a form of repetition.
