Follower Exhibition, 2007
Towards the start of the Summer of this year (2007) I was introduced to the people of The Underground Cafe, in Edinburgh. It is just off the St. James parking facilities. I have managed to keep in contact, and we have an agreement for my work to be shown for the foreseeable future. We get on rather well, so that can only be a good thing. Which reminds me, if you have a contact, always keep them informed, it will only strengthen your position and other possibilities for your career.
I have been quite lucky this year , in the terms that I have been able to take advantage of the situation and ‘broadcast’ my work to the paying public of the Underground’s facilities. I have heard good feedback about my work, which has helped raise my confidence levels a notch or two.
Currently, I have a series of photographic work on a wall display. The Underground to me is more suitable for wall pieces rather than sculpture. Although, there was a small sculpture there recently, so there must be the occasional exception. My work is based upon a the work of Sophie Calle, a French artist/photographer. Basically, I received a small brief and an artist’s name to which I was to gain research upon and then react to their work in my own way.
The aim was to follow someone without them knowing. Now, Calle originally did this in a way which would nowadays be considered as illegal, fortunately I considered this so I had to make my subject aware before the work could begin.
With that concept in my mind, I asked the subject to be at a certain place at a certain time, from that point I would then pursuit. It was an outlined success which gave me some beautiful imagery.
Work from the series
I would like to add that you should take yourself along, and please let me know what you think.
I should have some new work up for early November and the seasonal period.
