African Masks-Makeover/Struggle
A brief descriptionThis was work I spent a small amount of time working on whilst at ECA. It is another project that I could see going further. A wood based project that drew focus from very original African masks with as the title suggests/determine, has a modern day makeover. The masks represent the general focus of tribal beliefs and traditions. For instance, much like cultural and religious beliefs that animals are sacred or in some cases even considered as Gods. I used bark from a tree as well as planks of wood, which I split in to smaller fragments to construct the main frame work(s).I chose an ape like structure for one mask and a cobra for the other, I even begun to work on the frame for an elephant mask but it was a very brief 3 week project. I was happy enough with what I had managed to make in the time issued.I incorporated, staples in to the structure and overall organisation of the faces. The staples were a representation of struggle and modern behaviorisms. In a more basic sense they represent; shackles, which then leads to slavery, which was caused by narrow mindedness and difference or even indifference, which supposed people of the time could not abide nor tolerate.Again, I challenge the viewer to make their own judgment(s), upon the subject(s) matter. The Masks
This work was always intended to be fun despite the topic. I remember when I was making them a lot of people didn’t know why, but the people that where intrigued did ask and they knew where I was coming from. I believe that, that is one of the most important things about your work, that it is understood on a level that not only you understand, but that others understand.
